This feels like a sweet spot. We're big enough to accomplish a lot as a team, but still small enough to stand up and see everyone at once. Playing music easily summons everyone to weekly all hands in the middle of the office.
First Subway Campaign
Our first NYC subway ads are a huge bet. At the time, very few tech companies advertise this way. People start sending us photos and saying, “I saw you on the train!” We have a goal to put ourselves on the map. It works.

Customer Success at Justworks starts to grow and evolve as a cornerstone of what we do. Admittedly, we're a bit obsessed with the entrepreneurs and teams we get to help everyday.

First company retreat
Almost two years in, we embark on Justworks’ first retreat to the wilderness. It becomes one of our favorite traditions and continues to this day.
Random Lunch begins
Every month, employees pair off with a new colleague to grab lunch. The tradition, which continues today, helps keep the company feeling close-knit as we grow.
Updating our brand
Until now, there hasn't been time for an extensive design exploration. The team heads to an off-site to finish up and launch the redesign of our visual brand.

We set out to execute on growing our salesforce and investing in marketing, software development, and proving our unit economics to partners and investors.
Testing the pilot
We never call our beta a beta. We call it a pilot because there’s no room for error with what businesses do in Justworks. We build a lean UI and deepen functionality based on what people demonstrate real demand for. This approach allows us to scale the product efficiently.
Our first real office
At 125 Maiden Lane, the carpet is still damp from Hurricane Sandy, which had flooded the area six months prior. Unfortunately, Ikea is out of regular desks so we're stuck with child-sized versions for some time. We couldn't be happier. Finally, we have a home.
Defining our values
The team gathers for an off-site at Isaac’s apartment to talk about what sort of qualities should define Justworks as it grows. We discuss the attributes of people and leaders we admire and respect. The outlines of COGIS take shape.
First employees start
The attributes of our team today — kind, smart, hard-working — exist in Justworks' first hires (and Milo, Isaac's dog). We're an eclectic group, but have some common threads. Everyone wants to do something great and to be proud of what we are building.
Seed funding of $1M
Friends cover enough to hire Justworks' first engineers and get the company off the ground, with Isaac raising the rest from outside investors in parallel.
New Work City
We start working out of a non-profit coworking space called New Work City, which happens to become Justworks' very first customer. The Blue Man Group rehearses on the floor above us. Yes, it gets loud.
The platform is born
It all starts with the company directory screen — if you know who is who, you can go from there to complete other tasks. Isaac works on coding the payroll engine and integrating income tax calculations next.
Clockwork, Inc
Isaac Oates founds Justworks as Clockwork, Inc. The original name, which implies reliability, ends up being a little too reminiscent of "A Clockwork Orange." Plus, clockwork.com is taken. Voila, Justworks.
